Or they ride them because they like the tech that goes into them and for the fun of it. They either use the bike for their intended purpose, like racing. Fucking peasants.ĭon't get me wrong, there are some people with high end, extremely expensive, bikes. They then turn their noses up at anyone else who rides cheaper, basic bikes. On the weekend you usually see a flock of them in the wild, cycling at a whopping 12mph on their superior aero machines, down country lanes that are well within the radius of a gastro pub. It'll always start with "my 4k road bike". No name or make of road bike when they talk about cycling and what they ride. They never forget to mention the price at every opportunity either. Then they bang on about it constantly, about how good it is, using words like "superior" "elite" "superb" etc. Even if it makes no sense or it's way past their capabilities. I think the Jap car analogy is a good one - great products but a bit vanilla and common.Įnd of the day screw the haters - and all the better if you can sail past them on an "inferior" bike! Likewise my mid-range "British" Boardman has "Made in Taiwan" on the underside of its bottom bracket.ĭespite the stuff above Giant seem to acquit themselves well - assuming the cycling press can be believed they're always amongst some of the best in group tests and praised in reviews, while I believe they've done OK in competitive cycling in the past. While I admit it can be great to own low-volume products that feel special "exclusivity" really means nothing.Īs others have pointed out Giant make a lot of components for other people - composite frames being one as the facilities and knowledge require are fairly specialised.ĭespite being "American" I bet hardly any of Specialized's components parts are made in the US - Shimano group sets from Japan and I'd wager all but the very top end frames come from Taiwan - possibly from Giant. Who cares if a company makes something besides top end road bikes? Doesn't make the road bikes crap. Of course deconstructing these they're all rubbish. They're Taiwanese so perceived as inferior to "domestic" brands. They're a high-volume manufacturer so products are seen as common / not exclusive or exotic. They make a wide range of stuff (kids bikes etc) not just mid / top end road bikes which probably dilutes their brand image's "purity". I think they get a bit derided for several reasons: Despite having generally very positive experiences with my Giant (my first "proper" road bike that served me well for many years) I must admit a little prejudice towards the brand and while I did consider their offerings when searching for a replacement, eventually went with an arguably more prestigious brand (although for far more reasons than just the name).
